Ike Update #3
Published September 11th, 2008 in UncategorizedThe Houston area is a flurry of activity today. People are busy boarding up their homes and making sure they have the right provisions to make it through the storm and the possible aftermath. Some folks are rightly nervous, and others are more or less stubborn and obstinate about the situation. Those who live along the coast are fools if they do not leave.
The storm has not changed significantly from this morning. Winds are at about 100 MPH and the brand new update has the track moving a little closer to Houston.
Outbound traffic here in Houston has been slow but it is moving, and as of right now it appears that people are able to get out of town without the chaos that we all saw during Hurricane Rita. It will be interesting to see what will happen in the next few hours as the regular rush hour traffic meets the evacuation traffic.
I just saw a live shot of Galveston. There’s not much beach left as a very active tide is crashing against the seawall. It appears to me that the predicted storm surge is going to do bad things there. Authorities are working hard to remove people unable to leave the island on their own and are sending them to temporary shelter in Austin. My impression is that most people are understandably frustrated by the situation, but are being calm and patient while waiting for transportation.
Stay tuned. I’ll post another update this evening.
