When Ike Meets A Museum

Prior to Hurricane Ike, I occasionally enjoyed visiting the island community of Galveston. Though Galveston didn’t have the nicest beaches or niftiest tourist locations, it was still nice to drive along Seawall Boulevard to people watch and enjoy the view of the Gulf of Mexico. One of my favorite places in Galveston to visit is the Lone Star Flight Museum, which houses a wonderful collection of classic war planes and other memorabilia from the World War II era.

What makes this museum special is that many of the planes in the collection are in immaculate condition and are often flown to air shows. To protect the historic and irreplaceable planes, museum officials had all airworthy planes flown out of town before Ike could damage them. The museum and some of the remaining planes did suffer quite a lot of damage, and you can see photos in their Hurricane Ike Photo Gallery. Start with the last gallery on the list and work your way up.

In some of the photos, you will clearly see that the storm surge broke through the walls of the building and left about six feet of water.
