Those Magnificent Moodies

Those who know me know that my favorite band in the entire world is The Moody Blues. It’s odd that in the two plus years I’ve been doing this blog that I have managed to avoid (unintentionally) writing anything about them. After all, the name of this little blog is a rip off of one of their best loved songs!

Last night, I came across several Moody Blues videos while browsing YouTube and found quite a few great examples from the early years. I thought I would share a few here.

Here’s a video from a live performance in Paris in 1970. The song is “Never Comes the Day”.

Justin Hayward has one of the most hauntingly beautiful voices in all of rock history. In the late ’70’s, he and John Lodge worked together on an album called “Blue Jays” which included some very nice songs. Here’s Justin quite a few later performing one of my favorites, “I Dreamed Last Night”

One of the band’s early triumphs was their performance at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970. In this video, they perform what would ultimately become their signature tune, “Nights in White Satin”

Here’s a later performance (I’m thinking sometime in the 1990’s) of a well-known song off of the band’s “Seventh Sojourn” album. Seventh Sojourn was their seventh album and represents (to me, anyway) the pinnacle of the band’s success and popularity. It was after this album that the band took a rather long break to work on solo projects. Bass player John Lodge tells a story about how fans were constantly approaching the band and asking them for answers to all of life’s difficult questions. After all, the Moodies’ music was quite philosophical and poetic in those early years. John’s answer to the fans was the following song, “I’m Just A Singer in a Rock and Roll Band.”
