R.I.P. Gordon Waller

I found out this morning on the radio that Gordon Waller, half of the Peter and Gordon duo, passed away a few days ago. I got to see these guys when I visited Epcot in the Spring of 2007. While they lost their polished edge years ago, they were still a joy to watch.
Rest […]

Hoo boy! It’s getting hot out there, and I’m not just talking about the weather here in sunny Houston.
Unless you’ve been trapped in a pit, or have been either intentionally or accidentally avoiding any and all news stories, you’ve probably heard about the recent flap over comments David Letterman made last week regarding Alaska […]

According to Wikipedia*, The Court Jester, a 1956 film starring Danny Kaye, was the most expensive comedy ever to be produced at the time. Costing 4 million dollars to make, the film bombed at the box office.
Here’s the most famous scene, and the scene for which Danny Kaye is most remembered.

*Wikipedia is always asterisk-worthy […]

Back In The Day…

Now that Jay Leno has finished his hosting duties on the Tonight Show, it seems appropriate on this night to take a trip in the wayback machine and watch a 1986 appearance of Jay on Late Night With David Letterman.
Jay was a riot back in those years, quick-witted and energetic, and one of the […]

My dad had an old Smothers Brothers record I used to listen to as a kid. I’ve always enjoyed this strange mix of comedy and folk singing.

R.I.P.

We lost another comic great yesterday. Dom DeLuise passed away at age 75.
Thanks for the laughter Dom, and rest in peace.

TR2N?

Did anyone know there was a sequel to Tron in the works?
Check out a tiny bootlegged teaser over at Gizmodo.

The latest Batman movie, The Dark Night, is getting some odd attention.  Some believe the film is too violent.
He may be known to many children as a comic book friend, but a Purdue University professor warns the new "Dark Knight" Batman is a much more violent reincarnation of the classic character.

Apparently this guy doesn’t understand […]

Thanks again to my friend Dave, who has shocked the blogosphere by posting not one, but TWO blog entries over the past weekend, I caught the free showings of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog before it was pulled from the net late last night.
The forty-minute musical is a creation of Joss Whedon, creator of television […]

A few days ago I took in PIXAR’S latest animated gem, WALL-E.  I found the movie to be a beautiful piece of art.  Though it is definitely a departure from their typical fare, this PIXAR feature did not disappoint me in any way.  Children may have a hard time with it, as much of the […]

Thanks to my friend Dave, who blogs at DeckMonster.com (not that anyone would know it lately!), I am now addicted to another toy on the Internet.
Dave has introduced me to many good things over the years, including TiVo, the music of Barenaked Ladies, Thai food, "burritos as big as your head", NetVibes, more video […]

I’d like to offer a quick recommendation to all music fans, especially those who may be old enough to remember the glory days of the band, Journey.
Released in 2006, Journey Live in Houston 1981: The Escape Tour (MP3 Download) (DVD) captures the band at the pinnacle of their career.
This set, recorded live at […]

I just finished watching the end of Herbie Fully Loaded (Yeah, my life is an exciting one).
Like the other Love Bug movies from the 1960’s, “Fully Loaded” is intended to be fun, frivolous entertainment. But I do have one issue with the film. Let’s suspend belief for a moment and assume that we […]

I watched the latest episode (Revelations) of Battlestar Galactica with amazement last night and once again this morning.  I then began writing an entry about the show and the questions that remain to be answered when the show finishes its final season in 2009.  For sure, my questions are no different than those of any […]

Last week, WGN Television had an event so enjoyable that it made me wish I could start my own television network.  Every evening last week "Chicago’s Very Own" offered a selection of episodes from popular television shows from the 70’s and 80’s, including Taxi, Barney Miller, Newhart, and one of my favorites, WKRP in Cincinnati.  […]
